action

The events are told from the perspective of the incarcerated Joe. The action takes place in the fictional country Everycountry, which is ruled authoritarian by the president Maximilian II for life. The time of the action is also fictional and spans the years -5 to +25 (0 being the year of the revolution). Torture , executions and rape determine the lives of the people in everycountry. The playwright Thorne founds the party “Citizens for Democracy and Justice”, which leads an underground armed struggle against the inhuman system of Maximilian. The fighters act just as brutally as the government troops and do not shy away from bomb attacks and the mutilation of innocent people.

Thorne is imprisoned. Joe falls to the task of guarding the public enemy . Joe begins to be interested in Thorne's ideas. Even when Joe served in a mysterious "Battalion 6" after his job as a caretaker and was promoted to officer , the two were in correspondence. They see each other again after Thorne's dismissal, which was initiated under popular pressure. Joe has since married and is a guard at the presidential palace. A short time later, Thorne storms the president's residence with the help of Joe. Maximilian II and his wife Josephine are surprised during a bizarre sex game and shot by Thorne. Thorne takes power and rules with the same harshness as his predecessor. Re-education camps are set up for his opponents. The revolution has brought neither freedom nor peace to people.

First of all, Joe is celebrated as a hero on billboards and on television, because he made the fall of Maximilian possible. However, he has doubts about the rightness of his actions - he had always hoped to be able to serve his country in this way. Now he realizes that this was not the case. When he refuses to take an oath on Thorne, Thorne has him thrown in jail. Joe resists all attempts at re-education. He will never see his wife and daughter again. After two decades, dictator Thorne is overthrown and Everycountry is ruled by a nephew of Maximilian II, who was in exile . It remains to be seen whether this will bring about an improvement for the people. Joe remains in prison because he is now accused of helping to overthrow Maximilian II. In the final sequence, Joe is seen sitting at the typewriter in prison, he imagines his now grown-up daughter coming to visit. The young woman is later seen crying in a hallway - she was really in prison with her father, who didn't notice her.
