Shadow of the Wolf is a 1992 French-Canadian adventure film based on the Inuit people . The literary model is the novel Agaguk by Yves Thériault .

action

1935, in northern Canada: Agaguk, the chief's son, lives among his people in the Arctic until he kills the white trader Brown in a dispute. Together with the girl Iriook, he leaves their home village against the wishes of his father Kroomak, the shaman , and builds his own igloo. News of Brown's death calls police officer Henderson to the Inuit village where he lives with Ramook. He cannot do anything against the village community and is ritually killed.

Meanwhile, Agaguk has reached his girlfriend's village with the now pregnant Iriook. They stay there until the village chief is killed in a whaling. Agaguk and Iriook now live alone again. The child, a boy, is born; Agaguk is badly wounded while hunting a wolf and has to be nursed back to health.

The plane brings many policemen to Kroomaks village. To save the community, Kroomak helps Police Chief Scott find Agaguk, but has him warned beforehand. Scott finds him anyway; Kroomak takes all the blame and appoints Agaguk as the new shaman. After his arrest, he throws himself off the plane and becomes a bird.

Reviews

“Adventure film about the invasion of civilization into an intact community. He convinces with excellent landscape shots and solid actors, but is staged too disheveled and treats the interesting ethnic aspects too superficially. "

"The film lives for a long time ... from its nature shots, which are so impressive that they almost push the story into the background."
