Slaughterhouse 5 (original title: Slaughterhouse-Five ) is an American science fiction film by George Roy Hill from 1972 based on the novel Slaughterhouse 5 or The Children's Crusade by the writer Kurt Vonnegut .

action

Billy Pilgrim is inwardly torn by his memories of the Second World War and the bombing of Dresden in February 1945, which he experienced as an American prisoner of war. Again and again he lived through this time in German captivity with his comrade Edgar Derby, who was shot by the Germans for a nullity. In order to deal with all of this, he fled into a dream world during the war, in which he lived happily in peace and complete satisfaction with his girlfriend. That helped him to survive everything physically in the confused time of the war in Germany. After returning to his native America, he married, had a house and two children. But his wife dies early in an accident and again he takes refuge in his dream world. This time, however, it is not his wife who is expecting him, but a pretty young girl, Montana Wildhack, who was kidnapped with him to the imaginary planet Tralfamadore. The inhabitants of the planet demand that the two mate, but Pilgrim remains quite a gentleman and refuses. But he finds Montana Wildhack quite attractive and she looks very much like his wife. Montana finds Pilgrim interesting and falls in love with her. When the residents of Tralfamadore witness the birth of the Pilgrim and Montana baby, they set off fireworks of joy.

reception

"Despite some lengths and the kitschy planetary sequence, which only offers a sham solution, the film provides extremely useful food for thought on the subject of violence."

"Hills Film - a mixture of gorgeous triviality and tongue-in-cheek cunning - here links several time levels with each other in a virtuoso manner and thus provides serious suggestions for reflection on the effects of violence."

Awards

At the 1972 Cannes Film Festival , the film won the special jury award . In 1973 Schlachthof 5 received the first ever Saturn Award for the best science fiction film .
