Meg Christian (* 1946 in Lynchburg , Virginia ) is an American singer of folk music .

Life

After finishing school, Christian studied music and English at the University of North Carolina and moved to Washington, DC in 1969 , where Christian began performing as a singer in nightclubs and writing song lyrics on feminist and socio-political topics. Christian was one of the founding members of Olivia Records , which publishes songs by women in particular. In the 1970s, Christian dated the musician Holly Near for three years . Christian performed as a singer of American folk music at various festivals in the United States in the 1970s. In 1984 Christian began studying Asian mysticism and as a result of these studies he released the albums The Fire of My Love and Songs of Ecstasy . Christian changed her family name to Shambhavi and went to an ashram in New York City in the 1980s . In 2002 Christian followed up her ties to Olivia Records and appeared as a singer at various events.
