Career as a coach

FC Bayern Hof

Steinbrück, who was born in Berlin , replaced Gerhard Mälzer as coach of FC Bayern Hof at the end of January 1950. Its first team played in the second-class Bavarian regional league for promotion to what was then the top division of the Oberliga Süd . In second place, the Upper Franconians took part in a promotion to the league with VfL Neckarau , Viktoria Aschaffenburg and TSG Ulm in 1846 , but were beaten in third place by Ulm and VfL Neckarau, who were ultimately eligible for promotion. At least Hof managed to be classified in the 2nd division south , which was created this year as a substructure for the upper division. There the team occupied eighth place in the table in the 1950/51 season.

Meidericher SV

In the run-up to the 1951/52 season, Steinbrück went to the Ruhr area for Meidericher SV, which had previously made it to the Oberliga West for the first time. There he replaced Willi Multhaup , who had surprisingly switched to Preußen Münster . After a mediocre start to the season, the strong opponents FC Schalke 04 , 1. FC Köln and Preußen Münster were clearly beaten and Borussia Dortmund were beaten 5: 4 in the further course of the first half of the season . At the end of the season, the team led by captain Kurt Neumann finished eighth and produced the league's top scorer with the 25-time successful Karl Hetzel . In the summer of 1952, Steinbrück's time with the "zebras" ended. When the club found itself in a sporting crisis in the spring of 1955, he returned as an interim coach. Although the distance to fourth in the table Borussia Dortmund was only a few points and the middle of the table was always within reach, the MSV could not free itself from the relegation zone and had to accept the first relegation from the league at the end of the 1954/55 season.
