The Son is a television series produced by AMC . It is based on the novel The First Son by Philipp Meyer . The Western - family saga that extends over 150 years and three generations, is about the rise of the McCullough family one of the richest and most powerful families of Texas .

The first season had its German premiere on April 14, 2017 on the pay-TV channel TNT Serie . In February 2019, AMC announced that it would not continue the series after the end of season two.

production

Philipp Meyer, author of the novel, founded El Jefe in 2014 together with Brian McGreevy and Lee Shipman , the aim of which is to give authors greater control over adaptations of their works. The Son finally took shape as the first project after several production companies had already shown interest in Meyer's book. At the beginning of 2016 the deal with AMC came about, whereby Meyer was involved as both screenwriter and executive producer . Originally Sam Neill was supposed to star in the series, but he left the project for personal reasons. He was replaced at the last moment by the Irish actor Pierce Brosnan , who tried to quickly acquire a Texan accent.

Production of the series officially began in June 2016. Meyer wrote the script for three of the ten episodes and revised the remaining scripts, oversaw the five-month filming, and had a say in the cast, costumes and fight choreographies. He also gave his approval for some major changes compared to the novel, including the shortening of the depicted time span (Jeanne is introduced as granddaughter instead of Eli's great-granddaughter) and the softening of some scenes, which the Comanches in the eyes of the Indian actors in too negative Would have shed light.

In May 2017, while the first season was being broadcast, a second season was ordered. This was broadcast in 2019.

Cast and dubbing

The German-language dubbing of the series is produced by the dubbing company Scalamedia based on the dubbing book by Marika von Radvanyi (with Karim El Kammouchi and Matthias Kupfer ) under the dialogue direction by Marika von Radvanyi and Tobias Lelle .

reception

On Rotten Tomatoes , the first season received a mixed rating of 54% based on 24 reviews (average: 6.04 / 10). The consensus of the critics was as follows:

"The Son's epic narrative and strong central performance are crippled by sluggish pacing, hasty direction, and superficial execution."

" The Son's epic story and the strong performance [of the main characters] are paralyzed by clumsy pacing , fleeting direction, and superficial implementation."

- Rotten Tomatoes

Metacritic awarded 57/100 points based on 21 reviews.

Kevin Neuroth from the time sees the pilot episode of the series as an "interesting discussion [...] of the development of America from the violent conquest of European settlers to capitalist civil society [...] in which American archetypes are condensed".

Michael Hanfeld from the FAZ puts The Son in line with the other series Deadwood and Hell on Wheels , which he interprets as "character studies of people [and] morality in front of a great landscape". These are "free from the founding pathos and canyon romanticism [as well as the] stamp of [today's] zeitgeist". Hanfeld understands the figure of Eli McCullough as a "man who does not take prisoners", shaped by his youth, which was marked by the struggle for survival, in which he learned that one law applies above all else, namely "that of the one who turns off everyone else".
