CSI: Miami [ ˈsiːesˌaɪ maɪˈæmɪ ] is an American crime series produced from 2002 to 2012 by CBS Television Studios and Alliance Atlantis in collaboration with Jerry Bruckheimer Television for CBS . In Germany, the series is RTL , VOX, RTLnitro and on 13th Street and RTL Crime in Austria by ORF eins and pulse 4 and in Switzerland by SRF two in the dual language broadcast. The series is the first of three offshoots in the CSI series : On the trail of the perpetrators .

In May 2012, CBS announced the cancellation of the series after ten seasons and a total of 232 episodes.

In the advertising-relevant target group in Germany, CSI: Miami was the most watched TV series in 2012, ahead of Navy CIS .

Plot and concept

The starting point of an episode is usually a death or an assassination, which is often followed by another crime. CSI: Miami , like the other CSI series, is based on the Whodunit principle (perpetrator unknown), whereby genetic engineering is of great help to the criminalists.

Visual stylistic devices

One of the stylistic devices of the CSI series is the visual implementation of the securing of traces and evidence down to the smallest detail. A visual effect is e.g. B. the representation of a ball that flies through space in slow motion, or the behavior of human tissue at cell level under certain conditions.

Furthermore, the series has an unusually high color saturation - especially in the panoramic shots of the beaches and landscapes of Florida, which are shown between the individual scenes of the plot. This creates a warm base tone (especially rich green and yellow / orange) that reflects the Florida climate.

Extraordinary episodes

  • There is an episode before the actual pilot film ( backdoor pilot ): The episode Death in Miami is part of the second season of the CSI series : On the trail of the perpetrators .
  • After the backdoor series start of the CSI: NY series in the second season, CSI: Miami , Horatio Caine and Mac Taylor of the New York CSI team meet again in the fourth season . The crossover of the two series starts in Miami with the episode Blood Trail and ends in the "CSI: NY" episode driven hunt (2.07) .
  • In the third season there are two episodes that are 63 minutes long: The Wave of Death , in which Miami is threatened by a tsunami, and In Flames , where a serial killer is on the run from the police. In the second and third broadcast of the episode Die Todeswelle (in February 2007 and June 2010) on RTL, the episode was shortened to the length of a usual episode (approx. 42 minutes) by cutting out a storyline that was not necessary for the overall understanding. The pay-TV broadcaster RTL Crime and RTL's video-on-demand service, RTLnow.de , are showing the episode in the unabridged version.
  • The first episode of season 5 is set in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil. There Horatio and Eric hunt down the man who ordered the murder of Marisol. Horatio meets Yelina, his brother and his nephew there.
  • In episode 9 of the 4th season (play with us) , the fictional computer game is very similar to the real computer game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas . Clearly recognizable: the typical handguns, scarves over half the face as a gangster mask, typical vehicles and typical style of play. When unpacking the game, you can see the fictional cover, which is constructed in the same way as the cover of GTA: San Andreas . There was a similar plot in the film New Police Story with Jackie Chan .
  • Episode 8.07 ( A Journey into Fear - Part 1 ( Bone Voyage (1) )) is one of three crossover episodes with CSI: NY (6.07, Journey into the Abyss - Part 2 ( Hammer Down (2) )) and CSI : On the trail of the perpetrators (07/10, Journey to the End of Morals - Part 3 ( The Lost Girls (3) )). These 3 episodes were all broadcast on RTL and ORF one on November 23, 2010.

Facts

  • It is the first offshoot of CSI: On the trail of the perpetrators .
  • CSI: Miami is broadcast in over 36 countries.
  • With an average of over 16 million viewers, CSI: Miami is the most-watched Monday night show in the US, making it one of the most watched shows in North America.
  • The abbreviation “CSI” stands for “Crime Scene Investigation”.
  • The show is produced in the USA (the majority of the filming locations are in Los Angeles and Miami-Dade County / South Florida). Like all other CSI series, CSI: Miami is mainly filmed in a former warehouse in El Segundo (south of Los Angeles Airport ). The exterior shots are mostly shot in Long Beach , as it looks similar to Miami . They are limited to just a few days for each season.
  • Lt. Horatio Caine is named after Horatio Alger , an American writer.
  • The announcement of war or “The Hero's Promise”: The scene before the opening credits of almost every episode ends with the so-called “Announcement of War”, as Ann Donahue once put it. Usually it is Horatio Caine who says the last sentence before the series opening credits run. While the original "CSI" series is mostly a black-humored, sometimes cynical comment on the crime, the way the victim died or the circumstances in which it was found, CSI: Miami is the promise to bring down the perpetrator. There are declarations of war like “Ricky, the man (perpetrator) obviously has no idea about our work. I promise you it will come soon! ”(Victim of a shooting),“ Yes, it can be. But this, that was murder. ”(As an answer, whether the death could have been an accident) or“ Our Mister Bremen had a rendezvous with death ”(about a crime scene where a woman was probably staying). In another episode: “Whoever attacks one of us attacks us all!” (About a crime scene where a police officer was shot).
  • The German dubbing voice of Ryan Wolfe could already be heard in an episode of the 2nd season: In The Death Bar, the lawyer Aaron Schecter was synchronized with the voice that can be heard regularly from the 3rd season. Also Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo of the series NCIS is of Norman Matt synchronized.
  • In their first appearance in the CSI episode Death in Miami, Calleigh Duquesne and Eric Delko have a different dubbing voice than in the CSI Miami seasons, Tim Speedle speaks with Delko's later dubbing voice.
  • The title music for the CSI series comes from the British rock band The Who , in the case of CSI: Miami it is Won't get fooled again .
  • There is a computer game of the same name for the series.
  • The rapper Xzibit has a guest appearance in the episode Deadly Rhymes .
  • Skateboarder Tony Hawk made a guest appearance on Game Over as Jake Sullivan .
  • Rory Cochrane ( Tim Speedle ) dies a serial death in the opening episode of the third season . He wanted to invest more time in film projects and after two years found himself overwhelmed by the rigors of a series that was broadcast almost weekly.
  • The US premiere of the fourth season crossover (see Extraordinary Episodes ) had a world premiere: At the beginning of both episodes, the song Hung Up by pop singer Madonna was played before the actual release.
  • In almost every episode, technical branded devices from large companies can be seen in close-up (including Apple , Dell and HP ). In addition, the entire CSI team will be equipped with Hummer vehicles, the Hummer H2 model .
  • Raymond Caine Jr. was played by a total of three different young actors. In season 5, Carter Jenkins , who previously had a guest appearance in CSI: NY (episode 1.11, Unter Strom ), plays the nephew Horatio Caines.
  • The visual stylistic devices are a typical characteristic of CSI: Miami: Each season had a specific color coordination (e.g. season 3 yellow, season 4 orange), which was mainly reflected in the coloration of the TV image and the color scheme of the landscape . This strict basic concept has been relaxed in the newer seasons, now the luminous colors of Miami and the sunny state of Florida are generally the focus. In almost every scene there is a color contrast between blue, orange, yellow or green. In addition, the split screens that have been increasingly used since season 4 allow different camera angles or activities to be combined in one sequence. Another stylistic device is the aerial shots of Miami or important locations between individual scenes.
  • The Miami-Dade Police Department is actually the building of Sky One Federal Credit Union in Hawthorne (California, 14600 Aviation Blvd.) .
  • In episode 18 of season 5 ( three are too many ), Colin Ferguson (leading actor in the US series Eureka - The Secret City ) played a double role, as did Leslie Bibb , known as Det. Lu Simmons from Crossing Jordan , who played triplets .
  • Jonathan Togo (Ryan Wolfe) would like a different German dubbing voice. He has already complained about this to no avail.
  • The series has no planned series finale, just a simple season finale, as the broadcasting television station CBS announced the cancellation of the series in May 2012, but the last episode was aired on April 8, 2012.
