CSI: Miami first aired during the second season of the series CSI: On the Trail of the Criminals . The pilot episode Death in Miami premiered in the US on May 9, 2002 on CBS . The German-language premiere showed the German Free TV transmitter RTL on 12 February of 2003.

Despite his gunshot wound, Horatio manages to save Natalia from the car. When both are in the hospital, Horatio leaves the hospital prematurely to continue looking for Jack Toller. Calleigh persuades Austin, Randy North's son, to set a trap for his father who fled after putting Horatio and Natalia in mortal danger. The trick works and Randy is arrested. Now he is supposed to set a trap for Toller, but this trick fails because it took place in a marshalling yard and a train blocked the investigators' view. Toller now has another woman in his power. It is clear to the CSI that the serial killer will burn them too. But Walter finds out the place where Toller burned his earlier victims - a garbage dump. When the investigators arrive at the garbage dump, Toller sets the fire to kill the woman. Walter can save the woman and Horatio and Eric put Toller. After this chase, Horatio is at the end of his strength. In the end he lets himself be taken to the hospital.
