Joe Flanigan (* 5. January 1967 in Los Angeles , California ; born as Joseph Harold Dunnigan III ) is an American actor .

Joe Flanigan was adopted by his stepfather . When he was six years old, he and his family moved to the small Holcomb Lane Ranch on the outskirts of Reno, Nevada . At the age of 14 he attended boarding school in Ojai , where he made his first experiences as a theater actor in a school performance. He played Stanley Kowalski from the play Endstation Sehnsucht by Tennessee Williams . He then began studying history at the University of Colorado , which he successfully completed. Here he played the title role in the play Coriolanus vonWilliam Shakespeare .

After Flanigan spent a year in college , he took the opportunity to spend part of his studies in Paris as part of the Junior Year Abroad Program . He then worked in a number of odd jobs (for example in banking or politics), but these never satisfied him. He was fired from Interview Magazine during this time and decided to move to New York City . His neighbor in New York was an actor and encouraged him to break into the industry. So he began to study at the renowned drama school Neighborhood Playhouse in New York.

Flanigan made his first acting experiences in commercials . He made his television debut in 1994 in a leading role in the Emmy- nominated NBC miniseries "Family Album" by the writer Danielle Steel .

Flanigan had guest roles in numerous TV series, such as Profiler , First Monday and Sisters , until his breakthrough with the role of Major / Lt. Colonel John Sheppard succeeded in Stargate Atlantis . For the series, he also wrote the scripts for Epiphany from season two and Outcast from season four.

In 2010 he played the lead role of Colonel Sam Synn in the movie Ferocious Planet . In 2013 he played the role of Elliot Salem in the video-game Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel .

family

In 1996, Joe Flanigan married the actress and painter Katherine Kousi, with whom he now has three sons.

Due to the filming of the Stargate Atlantis series , Flanigan and his family moved from Malibu, California to Vancouver, Canada . After filming, they moved back to Los Angeles , California.
