Naya Marie Rivera (born January 12, 1987 in Valencia , Santa Clarita , California - † July 8, 2020 in Lake Piru , Ventura County , California) was an American actress , singer and model . She gained wider fame for her role as Santana Lopez , who she impersonated in the television series Glee .

Life

Rivera described herself as half a Puerto Rican , a quarter German and a quarter African American . Her mother named her after a mermaid from the US television series Fantasy Island . Rivera's younger brother Mychal Rivera is a professional footballer in the NFL , and a younger sister works as a model. Her mother was a model and actress. Rivera began her career in show business at a young age. From then on, she modeled for K-Mart and played in music videos for various artists; she also appeared regularly on US television series. Rivera achieved her breakthrough in the United States and Germany with the television series Glee , in which she played the lesbian cheerleader Santana Lopez .

Rivera can be heard in the muse cover Supermassive Black Hole (2012) by 2Cellos . In 2013 she released her first single, Sorry featuring Big Sean , with whom she was dating until April 2014.

In 2014 Rivera married Ryan Dorsey in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Their son was born in 2015. On November 25, 2017, Rivera was arrested by West Virginia police. She was accused of domestic violence . She is said to have physically attacked her husband. She was released after interrogation and bail. In January 2018, Ryan Dorsey's ad was officially withdrawn. The couple divorced in June 2018.

As of July 8, 2020, Rivera was found missing after a boat trip with her four-year-old son on Lake Piru Reservoir in the Los Padres National Forest in California. Her son was found alone on the boat. According to investigators, he said his mother jumped into the water but did not come back. An initiated search was initially without result. The authorities assumed the death of Naya Rivera on July 9, 2020. On July 13, 2020, the death was officially confirmed after her body was found. An autopsy revealed drowning to be the cause of death.

Rivera was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills , Hollywood , on July 24, 2020 , a cemetery known as the final resting place of numerous entertainment figures. In addition to Rivera's family and close friends, members of the Glee cast were also present at the ceremony .
