Katherine Moennig
Katherine Sian Moennig (born December 29, 1977 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American actress .
Life
Moennig comes from a well-known family of artists in Hollywood . Her mother, Mary Zahn, is a former Broadway dancer who has appeared in films such as Funny Girl and Thoroughly Modern Millie ; her father William H. Moennig had a violin making workshop and her grandfather William Moennig comes from the German town of Markneukirchen . She is the cousin of Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow , her uncle is film producer Bruce Paltrow , and her aunt is fellow actor Blythe Danner. Moennig's acting career began in 1987 at a theater workshop for children. She wrote an improvised version of Winnie the Pooh , which was subsequently performed at the Philadelphia Free Library under her direction and participation. After graduating from high school, she went to New York City and graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Art. Two months later, she began training in the backstage area of the Williamstown Theater Festival. There she took on an extra role in Gwyneth Paltrow's stage debut in William Shakespeare's As You Like It .
Moennig made her television debut in 1999 in the teen drama Young Americans , an offshoot of Dawson's Creek . She played the role of Jacqueline "Jake" Pratt, who poses as a boy to get a place at a prestigious New England school .
Also in 1999 Moennig auditioned for the female lead in Boys Don't Cry , which however went to Hilary Swank . In 2001 she had a small role in Lasse Hallström's ship reports , followed by roles in Love The Hard Way and Invitation to a Suicide . From 2004 to 2009 Moennig starred in the US television series The L Word - When women love to see women , she played the androgynous lesbian hairstylist Shane McCutcheon.
In 2007 a 35-minute documentary with Moennig was released under the title My Address: A Look at Gay Youth Homelessness in collaboration with the Hetrick Martin Institute (HMI), directed by Gigi Nicolas. In 2009 Moennig played the role of Dr. Miranda Foster on the CBS series Three Rivers Medical Center , which was discontinued after a season of 13 episodes. In 2010 Moennig played a tattoo artist in the series Dexter . In 2011, she starred in The Client alongside Matthew McConaughey , Marisa Tomei , Ryan Phillippe and William H. Macy, a small role of a drug addict prostitute named Gloria.
