Reviews

“An attempted film adaptation of a Chinese underground novel that reproduces the criminal underworld of New York as a fictional decal, but does not know how to convince emotionally. Since the character drawing of the people is not convincing, only an attached outsider myth is confirmed. "

Ty Burr praised the portrayal of Adrien Brody in The Boston Globe on July 11, 2003 and criticized Charlotte Ayanna's play and the final scenes of the film.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of June 27, 2003 that Adrien Brody would be very well cast in the role of Jack, even better than in the role of Władysław Szpilman in The Pianist . Ebert described the debauchery that Claire indulged in after breaking up with Jack as self-punishment. He wrote that he would have expected her more in a French film than in an American flick. He criticized the portrayal of Pam Grier as strange and artificial, the film ending as unsuccessful.

Ulrich Behrens praised the portrayals of Adrien Brody, Charlotte Ayanna, August Diehl and Jon Seda as well as Pam Grier's screen presence on the website www.filmstarts.de. He wrote that the film fascinated him.

Awards

Peter Sehr won the 2001 Silver Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival and was nominated for the Golden Leopard . He also won the Bavarian Film Prize in 2002 .

Adrien Brody and Charlotte Ayanna each won a prize at the French Festival International du Film d'Action et d'Aventure in 2002.
