action

At the beginning of the film you see a nature shot of a field, on which a young man is standing with the muzzle of a revolver in his mouth. Immediately afterwards the camera fades out and you can hear a shot.

Mason Mullich, a common 16-year-old teenager from Idaho , lives quiet and secluded with his family. His parents' marriage is about to end; When Mason's mentally disturbed Uncle Robert comes to visit, Mason's father Luke freaks out and there is a scandal.

The next day, Mason meets a girl named Danny, who has just moved to small town with her mother. They become friends and arrange to meet for the next day. Mason steals a chain with a gold heart-shaped pendant from Danny's moving truck while Danny is busy.

Luke, Mason's father, wants to make his candidacy for the district representative public and puts up voting signs in the whole area. One day he sticks election posters until night falls. He drives in the dark and pouring rain on a country road, until suddenly a homeless man walks in front of Luke's car and is fatally struck. Luke tries to get the dead man away and drives home first, where he is surprised by Mason. He drives back to the scene of the accident with his father, believing that his father's car would have got stuck in the mud. Luke covers the corpse pulled into the bushes with plants and instructs his son to drive home as soon as possible. Mason waits for his father to drive away, then gets out of his car and runs into the bushes, where he discovers the homeless man's body. A police car drives by and takes Mason with it.

Mason is interrogated at the police station, but he does not testify. Luke arrives at the station shortly afterwards, but his son is responsible for him and takes the blame on himself. Mason is sentenced to two years in juvenile prison.

Then you see short sequences that show Mason's parents sitting alone at the dinner table or how they go to church alone. Mason's parents can also be seen at the grave of Luke's brother Robert. Mason's father's long-suppressed emotions break through and he cries in his factory. The same evening as he goes to sleep, Luke is seen thinking. At the same moment, Mason is seen doing exactly the same thing.

Following is the display: two years later ( two years later ).

Mason is back home, but the marital climate has worsened as the unspoken truth - in this case Mason's father's guilt - hangs over the family like the sword of Damocles .

Mason meets his former girlfriend Danny again, but she is already dating Eddie's brother, Mason's best friend. Nevertheless, she immediately takes him back to her heart. The two go to a party where Danny wants to sleep with Mason. However, this fends off. However, he also tells her how much she means to him and gives her back the gold chain. Danny kisses Mason and says that she loves him.

Meanwhile, Mason's father is pulling weeds in the garden until he hears a clang. He goes into the house, where his wife is destroying vases, plates, glasses and dishes . She asks Luke to talk to her more to preserve the marriage at least a little. Luke then tells her the truth about the car accident two years ago.

The next day, Mason's friend Eddie and his brother fight until Mason intervenes and saves Eddie. Eddie's brother threatens Mason with death. Mason and Eddie walk down a country road until they come across train tracks with an old man standing by. Eddie explains to Mason that the old man lost his wife a year ago, who was hit by a train. Now the man stands there every day and waits.

The love affair between Mason and Danny is getting better and better and they are happy together. Danny's mother also likes him and asks Danny to take him out to dinner.

The next day, Danny goes to a large field with Mason, where they talk and finally sleep together. The two stay in the field until sunrise, during the night you can see Danny's mother who is at a loss as to where her daughter is.

Mason's father Luke plans to go fishing with his son the following day. Mason's mother explains to him that if he doesn't want to, he doesn't have to go. Mason replies that he wants to go. At the lake there is finally a discussion between Luke and Mason and the two forgive each other.

Meanwhile, Danny comes home and sees on the outside wall a sign saying to rent ( for rent ). Danny reproaches her mother for wanting to destroy her life and hating her.

That same afternoon, Mason, Danny, and Eddie are sitting in the back of a pickup truck and Eddie offers Danny drugs that his brother gave him. Danny asks Mason if he minds, Mason answers no. Much later - Mason and Eddie fell asleep - Danny goes to the nearby lake, goes underground and kills himself .

In broad daylight, Mason suddenly wakes up and looks around for Danny. He sees something floating on the lake, jumps in and pulls Danny weeping out of the lake.

In the meantime, Mason's friend Eddie is talking to his brother, who forces him to give false evidence to the police with a death threat. So says Eddie against Mason, he gets an arrest warrant . However, Mason's parents pay the bail shortly afterwards .

The next day, Mason goes to Eddie's house and just looks him in the eye. Eddie wants to say something, but Mason turns away from him.

A few hours later, Mason and Luke visit the grave of Mason's uncle Robert. Luke tells Mason that he loves him no matter what. Mason nods and walks across the large field to the lake where Danny committed suicide. He tries the same thing at first, but emerges again and goes to the train tracks, where he meets the old man. After the train has passed through, Mason waits a short time, then runs after him and climbs onto a wagon.

Meanwhile, Mason's friend Eddie testifies again to the police, this time against his brother.

Afterwards you can see the train going away again. The film ends with this shot.
