Vikas Swarup (* 1963 in Allahabad ) is an Indian diplomat and writer.

He wrote the bestseller Q and A , which stands for questions and answers , and the German title Rupien! Rupees! wearing. This is a novel about a poor Indian waiter who wins a billion rupees on a quiz show and then ends up in jail on suspicion of fraud. According to Swarup, he was inspired for his book by visiting one of the learning stations of the Hole in the Wall educational project . The book was published in 2005, has now been translated into almost 30 languages ​​and was made into a film under the title Slumdog Millionaire (2008). The film was awarded a total of eight Academy Awards.

Life

Vikas Swarup was born in Allahabad in 1963 into a family of lawyers. Vikas Swarup studied Modern History, Psychology and Philosophy at Allahabad University. After graduating from university, he started working at the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1986. The Indian diplomat has worked for the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in various countries: Turkey (1987–1990), United States of America (1993–1997), Ethiopia (1997–2000), Great Britain (2000–2003) and South Africa (2006 -2009). From 2009 to 2013 he was Consul General in Osaka - Kobe in Japan. From 2015 to 2017 Vikas Swarup was the official spokesman for the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in New Delhi. He has been India's High Commissioner in Canada since 2017.

His first novel, Q&A ( rupees! Rupees! ) Was written within two months while Vikas Swarup was living in London. Since the literary success of his first novel, other novels have emerged. Vikas Swarup has also participated in various literary festivals including the Kitab Festival in New Delhi, the St. Malo International Book & Film Festival France, the Jaipur Literature Festival, the Manila International Literary Festival and the Reykjavik International Literary Festival. Vikas Swarup also participated as a jury member at the 33rd Cairo International Film Festival for the Feature Digital Films category. He was also a judge at the Man Asian Literary prize 2011.

Vikas Swarup's wife Aparna is an artist with international exhibitions. Vikas Swarup and his wife have two sons, Aditya and Varun.

Slumdog Millionaire (Eng. Slumdog Millionär ) is a film by Danny Boyle based on the novel Q&A . In 2009 the film won a total of eight Academy Awards. Due to the film's success, some publishers have now published the novel under the title Slumdog Millionaire instead of the original title Q&A .
