David William Rabe (born March 10, 1940 in Dubuque , Iowa ) is an American novelist , playwright and screenwriter .

Life

David William Rabe was born to Ruth McCormick and William Rabe. In his hometown he attended several Catholic schools and received his bachelor's degree from Catholic Loras College . His subsequent theater studies at Villanova University was interrupted in 1965, during the Vietnam War , when he was drafted into the United States Army . He spent the last eleven months of his two-year service until 1967 in Vietnam . Upon his return, he completed his Masters in creative writing at Villanova. With his first play Stick and Bones , in which he processed his Vietnam War experiences, he won a Tony Award for Best Play in 1972 . The play was filmed in 1973 and Rabe himself made his debut as a screenwriter with the drama The Hunt for Life . This was followed by other films such as The Damned of War , The Company and Hurlyburly , for which he wrote the screenplay, with the latter he adapted his own play.

Rabe had a child with his first wife, Elizabeth Pan, whom he married in 1969. He also had two children together with his second wife, Jill Clayburgh , with whom he was married from 1979 until her death from cancer in 2010, including the actress Lily Rabe .
