Iivo Nei (born October 31, 1931 in Tartu ) is an Estonian chess player .

Life

In 1947 Nei was sixth in the USSR youth championship in Leningrad , the later vice world champion Viktor Korchnoi won the tournament. In 1948 Nei shared first place with Korchnoi at the subsequent USSR youth championship. Nei won the Estonian championship eight times (1951, 1952, 1956, 1960–1962, 1971, and 1974). In 1955 he was split 3rd – 6th. at the Baltic Championship in Pärnu , which Paul Keres won. In 1960 he won this championship (in Palanga ). In 1962 he won in Tartu , 1963 and 1964 he won the Baltic championship again. At the Baltic Championship in 1965 he was second behind Vladas Mikėnas .

In 1964, as an untitled player, he shared first place with Keres at the traditional and very strong blast furnace tournament in Beverwijk , his greatest international success.

The FIDE then awarded Nei the title of International Master in 1964 , according to the regulations of the time, a direct award of the Grand Master title was not provided, national successes did not count in the award, there were no Elo standards.

Nei rarely received invitations to tournaments abroad, but in the 1960s she belonged to the expanded world elite, regularly among the strongest 50 players, with 21st place as the top ranking. His highest historical rating was 2667, which he reached in December 1964.

Alongside Nikolai Krogius and Efim Geller , he was the official second of world chess champion Boris Spasski in 1972 at the match of the century against Bobby Fischer in Reykjavík .

Nei took part in the 1992 European team championship with the Estonian national team . At the European team championship in 1997 he was also nominated as a reserve player, but remained without use. Nei is listed as inactive at FIDE because he has not played an Elo-rated game since a senior tournament held in Stockholm in June 2011 .
