Hitchcock is a 2012 biopic by Sacha Gervasi . The screenplay is based on the biography Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho by Stephen Rebello . The film takes place during the making of the film Psycho and focuses the story on the relationship between Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville .

The film opened in American cinemas on November 23, 2012, and in Germany it was released on March 14, 2013.

In the wake of the production, the television film The Girl was broadcast a few weeks before the American theatrical release , which also shows an excerpt from Hitchcock's life - his fascination for Tippi Hedren during the making of the films The Birds and Marnie . The film is based on the book Spellbound by Beauty: Alfred Hitchcock and His Leading Ladies by Donald Spoto. The leading roles are played by Toby Jones and Sienna Miller .

action

In 1959, Alfred Hitchcock, who has been in the film business since the 1920s, celebrated a great success with the successful agent thriller The Invisible Third . He will be presented with a number of offers as the next projects. So he should z. B. film the James Bond novel Casino Royale . Sixty-year-old Hitchcock, whom a reporter provocatively asked if it wasn't time to quit, has no interest in this project. He reads the novel Psycho by Robert Bloch , which fascinates him. This describes a mentally ill male female murderer with a disturbed relationship with his mother - a character modeled after the real serial killer Ed Gein .

After reading the book, Hitchcock is certain that he has to make a film of this book. He casts Janet Leigh , Anthony Perkins and Vera Miles for the film version of Psycho . He has a tense relationship with Vera Miles. She was supposed to play the main role in Vertigo , but decided to have a baby, which Hitchcock resented her. The film industry is skeptical about the film project - a violent scene with nudity under a shower and the flushing of a toilet, which has never been shown in the film, should be shown. Geoffrey Shurlock, the President of the Censorship Authority, senses numerous violations of the Hays Code in the script submitted and therefore threatens to be denied the official approval seal, which at the time was a prerequisite for showing the film in American cinemas.

Since Hitchcock's production company Paramount Pictures does not want to finance Psycho , he and his manager plan to self-finance the project, whereby he has to take out a mortgage on his house. This critical situation leads to tension between 'Hitch' and his wife Alma, who has helped him with all productions so far, but never received the recognition she wanted from her husband. The marriage also suffers from the fact that Alma is jealous of the attractive blondes who star and starred in Hitchcock's films and resents him for flirting with his leading actress, Janet Leigh. The permanent control of the diet of the overweight Hitchcock also leads to tension. As a balance and relaxation, she begins a private collaboration with the screenwriter Whitfield Cook. When Hitchcock suspects that Alma is betraying him with Whitfield, it shows effects on his health and on the production of psycho . Finally, Alma - disappointed with Whitfield's way of life - seeks to talk to her husband. When the latter then recognized Alma's previous contribution to all of his films, both end the film Psycho as if in a frenzy . Alma is z. B., who convinced Hitchcock to accompany the shower scene with the music of Bernard Herrmann .

After Hitchcock has prevailed against the censors, the film is brought to the cinemas with a large-scale PR campaign. During the world premiere of Psycho , Hitchcock can be seen in the empty vestibule of the cinema, following the soundtrack of the film during the shower scene, as a conductor, smiling blissfully, directs the audience to the emotions they have shouted out.

The film ends with Hitch thanking his wife for her support and turning to the audience to tell the audience that he is already thinking of a new project. A bird lands on his shoulder. In the credits it is mentioned that Psycho should be Hitchcock's most successful film. Hitchcock, who never won an Oscar , thanked his wife Alma after receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute .

Reviews

"With 'Hitchcock' Sacha Gervasi brings an amusing chapter of film history to the big screen: a very fun affair, especially for a cinephile audience, with two outstanding actors."

“The Hitchcock in the title of this film is a cipher for a public and a private, a male and a female, an admitted and an unacknowledged side, in short a signature for which two people are responsible. It's an actor's film borne by the strong performances of Mirren and Hopkins. "

- critic.de

“'Hitchcock' hangs somewhere between biopic, drama and entertaining swank. Thanks to the excellent performance of the entire ensemble, especially Anthony Hopkins and a great Danny Elfman soundtrack, 'Hitchcock' is nevertheless an entertaining homage to one of the greatest directors of the last century. "
