Life
Louis de Bernières grew up in the Middle East as the son of a British officer. After school, he enrolled at Sandhurst Military Academy , but soon left the British Military School. His novel Birds Without Wings (German title dream of stone and feathers ) presents a love story set in an Anatolian village on the foil of the declining Ottoman Empire . In his ten-year novel, De Bernières sheds light on the cultural diversity that was once visible in the coexistence of Jews , Christians and Muslims even in everyday village life, tells of the rise of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and presents the readers with the growing Turkey as a plaything of occidental great powers.
Over the years, de Bernières received (in various categories) the Commonwealth Writers Prize ; 1991 for The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts , 1992 for Señor Vivo and the Coca Lord , 1995 for Captain Corelli's Mandolin and 2005 for Birds Without Wings .
