Lawless - Ned Kelly ( Ned Kelly ) is an Australian - British - French biopic from the year 2003 . Directed by Gregor Jordan , the screenplay was written by John Michael McDonagh based on the novel Our Sunshine by Robert Drewe .

action

As a child in 19th century British-dominated Australia, Ned Kelly rescues a British boy from drowning and is publicly honored. Years later, Ned, who belongs to the discriminated group of the Irish, is falsely accused and convicted of horse theft . He is released from prison after three years.

A little later, Ned's sister Kate is molested by the police officer Fitzpatrick. He chases her all the way to the Kellys' house, but is eventually beaten up and chased away. Offended in his honor, he claims that Ned shot him, but he was not present at the time of the incident. Rather, he had a brief affair with the middle-class married Julia Cook, on whose property he had worked for some time. Ned, his brother Dan, and friends Joseph Byrne and Steve Hart go into hiding. Since Ned cannot be found by the police, his mother is arrested instead and later sentenced to three years of forced labor. The police find the trail of the fugitives. When they surprise the police officers, they refuse to surrender and Ned kills three of them. The four are then ostracized and great rewards are offered for capturing them.

As Kelly Gang, you break the law and raid banks on a regular basis. They enjoy the acceptance of the population. The British then dispatch Francis Hare to arrest the gang members. He proceeds with the utmost determination and arrests anyone associated with Ned. Aaron Sherritt, a friend of Joseph Byrne, reveals the gang, for which he is shot by Byrne.

The gang retreats to the small town of Glenrowan, where they await a train with a special police unit in a community building. The planned derailment of the train fails because a resident betrays the action. A battle against the police ensues, in which the gang members protect themselves against the projectiles with steel armor. Joseph Byrne is still fatally hit, and there are also numerous casualties among the population. Dan Kelly and Steve Hart commit suicide after being trapped in a police-set fire. The shot Ned Kelly is arrested and - as you learn in the credits - hanged on November 11, 1880.

Reviews

Erin Free wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on March 18, 2003 that the film was an "excellent historical saga" that would not collapse under the weight of historical events. He was carried as much by the charisma of Heath Ledger as by Gregor Jordan's mixture of action and characters. Free praised the "rich, shiny" camera work, which gives the film a "seldom seen depth". The actors would consistently deliver "excellent performance".

David Stratton wrote in Variety magazine on March 27, 2003 that the film was "impressively staged" and kept in dark tones. It seems authentic, which would appeal to an Australian audience; his chances in the other countries are questionable. Heath Ledger gives an "imposing figure" as a charismatic outlaw.

Awards

Costume designer Anna Borghesi and production designer Steven Jones-Evans won the Australian Film Institute Award in 2003 . The film received seven other nominations for the same award, including for Heath Ledger, Orlando Bloom, director Gregor Jordan, screenwriter John Michael McDonagh, cinematographer Oliver Stapleton, and film editor Jon Gregory.

Heath Ledger, Joel Edgerton, John Michael McDonagh and Oliver Stapleton were nominated for the Film Critics Circle of Australia Award in 2003 . Production designer Steven Jones-Evans won an IF Award in 2003 , for which Oliver Stapleton was also nominated. The film was nominated for the Golden Reel Award in 2005 for sound editing .
