A young boy grows up on the beautiful but uninhabited coast of South Australia. He rescues three orphaned pelicans and raises them. A friendship develops between the white boy and an Aboriginal, with whom he tries to protect the pelicans from poachers, which his father, who works as a fisherman, does not like at first.

The film, produced by Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush , is an adaptation of the classic children's book of the same name by Colin Thiele . Directed by Shawn Seet while Justin Monjo adapted the novel for the film. A first film adaptation was published in 1976.

The shooting took place in the spring of 2017 in Coorong National Park , Lake Alexandrina , Ninety Mile Beach , Port Noarlunga , Horseshoe Bay and St. Vincent Gulf and in the Adelaide Studios in Glenside . Bruce Young acted as cameraman .

The film premiered in Victor Harbor on January 6, 2019 and was released in Australian theaters on January 17, 2019. A start in the USA took place on April 5, 2019. At the end of September and beginning of October 2019 it will be shown at the Zurich Film Festival .
