Colin Milton Thiele (born November 16, 1920 in Eudunda , South Australia , † September 4, 2006 in Brisbane , Queensland ) was an Australian author for young people .

Life

Colin Thiele was born in Eudunda as the fourth of five children of a German-born farming family. His paternal grandfather emigrated from Germany to Australia in 1855 . In 1941 Thiele received a degree from the University of Adelaide .

During World War II he was a corporal in the RAAF in the Northern Territory and New Guinea . In 1945 he married Rhonda Gill, with whom he had two daughters. From 1946 to 1956, Thiele taught English at high schools . From 1957 until his retirement in 1980 he then worked in teacher training.

Thiele published over 100 books in various directions (children's books, historical biographies, poems, books on education). His literary breakthrough came in 1963 with the book Storm Boy .
