After the swordsman Yang kills the members of a clan that has been at war for 500 years, he spares the last survivor, namely the child of the enemy. But his clan, the Order of the Sad Flutes, demands the child's death, which is why Yang flees with her. In a small village in the west he meets the knife thrower Lynne, whom he helps to improve knife throwing and in return she works for him at the laundry, which he takes over after his friend Smiley, who otherwise did the laundry in the village, dies.
