action

Suzette is desperate because she has just lost her job as a bartender in the famous Whiskey a Go Go . She is heavily in debt and has nothing but memories of how she traveled through the country as a groupie with her best friend Lavinia and accompanied Jim Morrison , among others . So she decides to go to her place in Phoenix , Arizona . Since her money barely reaches the next gas station, she has to take the stuffy and pedantic author Harry Plummer with her, who pays her for the trip. They talk on the way. Suzette tells how wild they used to be and Harry tells how he plans to kill his father with his loaded gun. Shortly after arriving in Phoenix, Suzette drops Harry off at his hotel and drives to Lavinia. Once there, however, she realizes that Lavinia lives in a completely different, stuffy, world, which is why she turns back and goes to Harry's hotel to sleep with him. Since he refuses, she sleeps one night in his room.

During the night, however, some young people party outside with loud music, alcohol and other drugs . Among them is Hannah, Lavinia’s daughter, who took LSD . Suzette takes care of her and drives her home the next day, where she meets Lavinia. But she doesn't want to know anything from Suzette, since she hasn't contacted her for 20 years, which is why she gives her 5,000 US dollars so that she never has to hear from again. This disappoints Suzette so much that she returns to Harry, where she wonders how much Lavinia could change. Shortly afterwards, Lavinia also appears at the hotel and tries to justify herself to Suzette. Her life is said to be perfect. But Suzette can't quite believe the ghost and then accompanies her to the driving school test of Gingers, Lavinia's second daughter, and discovers more and more narrow-mindedness in Lavinia's behavior. The daughters' dissatisfaction with their imperious mother cannot be concealed either, so that Suzette later tells over dinner about the wild life Lavinia has had behind her. Since the rest of the family can't believe this, they make fun of Lavinia.

This shows Lavinia that she has developed into someone she never wanted to be, which is why she goes to a rock concert with Suzette. After initial skepticism, she has a lot of fun, so she gets drunk and later drunk rummages through her collection of photos of famous penises with Suzette. Her husband Raymond surprises her, so that he is shocked who his wife actually is. However, the dispute cannot arise because a call comes in that Ginger without a driver's license had a car accident and is now in the hospital. Completely worried, everyone goes to where the argument about who Lavinia is, the imperious, bourgeois mother and housewife or the freaky groupie, escalates. Lavinia doesn't remember either, so Suzette blames herself for sparking a quarrel in the family, which is why she wants to leave town as soon as possible.

In addition, she still has to get rid of the contact with Harry, who, after both had sex, has blossomed completely and can now write again. The disappointment with the rejection leads him to go to the cemetery where his father is buried and he wants to kill himself. But Suzette and Lavinia can prevent that. After that has been prevented and the family has made up again, they all listen to Hannah's graduation speech at her high school. It is about finding yourself, not disguising it, and certainly not wanting to do justice to the lives of others. She would rather fail than be successful in what others want. She wants to be true to herself. With these words, Suzette and Lavinia say goodbye and Suzette drives back with Harry.

criticism

For James Berardinelli , the film was "a prime example of how good acting can turn a bad script into a watchable film." Although Hawn and Sarandon "know how to bring a character to life," the film is just "sketchy and full." Clichés. "

Although the film is always "pretty superficial" when the going gets tough, Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times was "glad" to have seen the film, which was due to Goldie Hawn, who is "infectious and personable in it Film is. "Only the" funny and silly Hawn and Sarandon "can distract from the poor quality of the script, especially because the" film doesn't know what to do with its characters. "

The lexicon of international films said: “The only partially peppy comedy celebrates spontaneity and self-fulfillment and distinguishes both from bigoted bourgeoisie. However, the characters are only vaguely developed, so that the course of action does not appear credible. "
