action

After Feeney deserted from the British Army, he returns to his Irish homeland and learns that his mother has died after she was thrown from her home and that his brother was hanged. When he comes across how his brother's widow and her children are to be evicted from their home, he tries to intervene, but is arrested and has to watch helplessly as his nephew is shot. He later manages to escape, killing six police officers. He returns to his brother's house, where the police had meanwhile covered the roof, and finds his sister-in-law and one of her daughters frozen to death in the ruins. There are only traces of the other daughter in the snow.

Feeney rides to Beartla, who, as a rent collector, has evicted his mother from her house and now uses it as a pigsty. After learning from him who the judge is who let his brother down, he beheads Beartla and puts a pig's head on the body of the dead man. He impaled Beartla's head in his mother's house. He then goes to the judge and kills him by hanging him at the courthouse.

In the meantime, Hannah, who served with Feeney in Afghanistan and most recently worked for the Royal Irish Constabulary , is put on his trail. Together with the army officer Pope he goes on a search. They come across those who have been killed and get to know Conneely, whom Pope hires as an interpreter. They realize that Feeney is on a campaign of revenge and ride to the estate of Lord Kilmichael's estate manager Cronin, on whose behalf Beartla also acted. Once there, they get into a shootout with Feeney, who has just killed Cronin. After Feeney was able to escape, the pursuers set off to Lord Kilmichael to warn and protect him. But he does not believe that he is in danger because he is protected by the police. He refuses to change his plans and sets off for Dublin with the grain he has collected from the farmers. Feeney's pursuers accompany him.

When the tour group stayed in a hotel, Feeney intruded there, but fell into a trap: Pope was lying in the lord's bed and Hannah was also in the room. But when he does not carry out the order to shoot Feeney, Feeney can escape and kidnap Lord Kilmichael.

The next day, Hannah is slated to be executed for insubordination. But Feeney intervenes and shoots two soldiers from the firing squad . Then he chases a horse, on which the tied and hooded Lord Kilmichael sits, into the barracks yard. The soldiers shoot him because they think he's Feeney. The starving locals waiting in front of the barracks break into the barracks and plunder the grain stores. In the general turmoil, Hannah manages to free herself from his bonds. He rides a horse into the stable where Feeney fights several soldiers to save him. The two flee together, with Feeney being shot and fatally wounded by Pope. As he dies, he advises Hannah to leave Ireland and go to America.

At the end of the film, Hannah pursues Pope, who rides alone, as he rides past a group of locals, including Feeney's niece. The locals, talking about emigrating to America, then turn away. Hannah stops at the fork in the road and looks indecisively after Pope and the locals several times.

criticism

“On the basis of its straightforward story of retaliation, the film unfolds a devastating panorama of the battered country and the political grievances, breaks up simple black-and-white paintings with differentiated figure drawings and tells of the roots of a spiral of hatred and violence that continued well into the 20th century reaches in.
