action

Young Chook arrives at a gas station with his father, Kev, where Kev trims his hair and beard before continuing their journey until Kev parks her car in a deserted property and removes the license plates. After a night in the open air, they visit Kev's ex-girlfriend, Maryanne. Kev persuades them to allow them breakfast. Maryanne then confronts Kev because she fears that Kev will be in trouble again, but Kev rebels and tries to get closer to her so that they sleep together - on the premise that Kev then disappears. When Chook is bathing, he is visited by Maryanne, who, at his request, tells how she met Kev. When Maryanne asks the boy for the phone number of Max, who she, Kev and Chook had lived with, Max replies if she could call him to see if he was okay. He had tried to call him shortly before but was interrupted by Kev. A little later, Kev traveled on with Chook and asked Maryanne not to tell anyone about her visit.

Eventually they break into a small, seemingly deserted museum. In conversation with his father, Chook asks about Max and why Kev hit him, but he reassures him that Max is fine. He then leaves Chook to go shopping in the nearby town, seeing the news of a murder on television, but being knocked out in a brawl as he leaves a bar. The next morning, Chook is discovered by a woman visiting the museum. When Chook learns that she is a doctor, he asks her to fly to someone to help him - Max - but Kev's arrival ends the conversation. He ties the woman up and continues with Chook in her car. Their journey takes them to a national park, where Kev sets up camp in the forest. There Chook remembers Max again, whereupon he pulls a cell phone out of the car, but cannot make a call due to the missing network. Shortly thereafter, they are tracked down by a ranger, whom Kev persuades to allow them another night in the national park. During the night Chook finds make-up utensils in the car and puts on make-up, but when Kev discovers this the next morning, he hits him several times with his belt before sending him off to clean himself. Shortly afterwards, at the pool, Kev visits Chook, who is now friendly again and teaches him to float on his back in the water; a first start to teach Chook to swim. When they return, their car has been discovered by the police, so Kev steals a new car at the nearby campsite and continues with Chook.

After some difficulties on their overland trip, they reach a salt lake , which Chook thinks back to her last night with Max when he went to bed with Chook and was beaten up by Kev. When he asks his father about it, the latter explains to him that Max is dead, whereupon Chook hits Kev in a fit of anger, who then exposes him and drives on alone. When Kev returns, Chook refuses to get into the car with him and continues on foot to the shore. There, Kev gets a rifle and food into his possession, before they are stored near a lake after a further journey, where Chook expresses his concern about their situation. A little later, the boy went outside the camp and sent a photo of his location to the police on his cell phone. Kev begins to worry about the boy’s whereabouts, but when he looks for him, he falls and injures himself. Since his father can no longer move, Chook shoots the rifle at the tires of their car before hiding again near their camp. The next morning police cars approach their whereabouts, whereupon Chook goes to his father, who tells him to go to the police for Maryanne. When he learns that Chook brought the police in, he explains that he did the right thing before sending him away. Chook leaves the rifle with Kev, who takes his own life with it. Chook sees his dead father and then runs to the nearby lake, where he plunges into the water and threatens to drown until he can float on the surface on his back.
