Stilles Chaos (original title: Caos calmo ) is an Italian film drama by Antonello Grimaldi , which is based on the novel of the same name by Sandro Veronesi . The film, which was shown for the first time at the Berlinale in 2008 , addresses the grief of television manager Pietro Paladini ( Nanni Moretti ) and how it was dealt with after the loss of his wife.

action

While Pietro Paladini rescues two women from drowning together with his brother Carlo ( Alessandro Gassmann ), a fashion designer, his wife dies unexpectedly at home. After the funeral, Pietro falls into a quiet chaos , which is also shaped by the care he has given to his daughter Claudia ( Blu Yoshimi ). The manager stays away from his work and spends every day in the park opposite his daughter's school. He sits in the car, walks through the park or eats in the park café. During the whole time the widower looks incredibly composed and becomes the contact point for his sister-in-law Marta ( Valeria Golino ), his brother and work colleagues who are affected by the merger of his group. It is the rebirth of someone who was once a workhorse.

interpretation

In the DVD interview with author Sandro Veronesi, he focuses on the question of how far apart “displacement” and “processing” really are. The film ends with the daughter wishing her father no longer had to wait in front of school, whereupon he drives his car into the credits. The daughter used to wish that he should take over one of the chief positions of the merger, which means that Pietro will return to his old life. With which the whole “displacement” has become a “processing”. So it is not about the rebirth of someone who was once a workhorse.

criticism

“Once again, Nanni Moretti's drama balances virtuously between cheerfulness and melancholy, flanked by secondary characters who, despite their relatively large number, develop into precisely drawn, lively characters under Grimaldi's direction. Like almost all good films that deal with death, "Silent Chaos" is, thanks to its unspectacular, but all the more touching panorama of human needs, joys and everyday rituals, a wonderful new discovery of life.
