The Théâtre Hébertot by night

The Théâtre Hébertot is a private theater on the Boulevard des Batignolles in the 17th arrondissement of Paris . The house has existed for over 180 years and has since been used almost continuously under different names, first as the théâtre des Batignolles and théâtre des Arts to today's théâtre Hébertot .

Thèâtre des Batignolles

The first theater in Batignolles, a suburb of Paris at the time, was founded in 1816 in Rue Lamandé by the Seveste brothers and was very simple in construction and equipment. After the municipalities of Batignolles and Monceaux were merged in 1830, the Minister of the Interior allowed the Sevestre brothers to build a new theater instead of the previous one. At the same time, another theater was built in Rue Lemercier by a competitor with the mayor's approval. The operation was banned in 1833 because the ministerial permit was missing. It was not until 1837 that the Ministry of the Interior gave permission for another theater to be built. In the same year the theater was founded as a limited partnership under the name Théâtre des Batignolles-Monceaux . Only then was the new building erected in which the theater is still located today, albeit under a new name. The Sevestere brothers took over the management, which they would hold until 1857. After several changes of management, the theater company went bankrupt in 1886. A new management, which also ran the Théâtre Montmartre, took over the business. The theater existed until 1906.

The repertoire ranged from contemporary dramas to comic opera and performances of vaudevilles . Pieces by Ernest Grenet-Dancourt ., François Coppée , Anaïs de Bassanville , Louise Michel , Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Honoré de Balzac were included . listed. Later greats like Marcelle Lender made their debut here.

Meetings were also held in the Batignolle. For example, holding Jean Jaurès a conference, dedicated to the work Travaille of Émile Zola apart sets.

At its heyday in the 1880s, Le Parnasse magazine named Batignolles as one of the best suburban theaters with the excellent actors.

Théâtre des Arts

The hall was completely renovated for the Théâtre des Arts. The reopening in 1907 under the new name met with some response. Not only was the piece Un Roi sans Couronne by Saint-Georges de Bouhélier discussed, but also the new furnishings and accessories, as well as the entrance fees. A review in Touche à tout magazine described the Théâtre des Arts as a small theater (as the successor to Batignolles) that is still an insider tip.

Even if Bouhélier and Jules Lemaître were given at the beginning , mostly comedies were performed or pure music performances were given and, according to a positive review, no comparison could be made with the former Théâtre des Batignolles. The art exhibitions in the theater also contributed to this, in which René Piot and Maxime Dethomas participated.

Despite everything, names like Sacha Guitry , Edwige Feuillère and Georges Pitoëff were associated with the Téâtre des Arts and in 1937 the 100th birthday of the house was celebrated.

Théâtre Hébertot

The theater was taken over in 1940 by the playwright Jacques Hébertot . After the takeover, the theater first bore the name Théâtre des Arts - Hérbetot. Hébertot then ran the house until his death in 1972. After a few changes in personnel, Jean-Laurent Cochet took over the Hébertot in 1982 for only two years. Even Philippe Caubère dabbled in the 80s with two productions. The ensemble included Jean Rochefort , Jean-Claude Brialy and Odile Versois , among others

Although the building has been a listed building since 1974, a renovation was carried out in 2009, in which a small hall, the Petit-Hébertot , with a further 110 seats was set up in addition to the large hall with 630 seats .
