Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois

Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois (born December 25, 1806 in Paris , † January 18, 1871 in Pau ) was a French theater poet .

As the son of poor parents, Anicet-Bourgeois enjoyed a very poor upbringing and in 1821 joined a Paris trustee as a clerk. After successfully staging his first piece, the melodrama "Gustave, ou le Néapolitain" , in this position in 1825, when he was barely 19 years old, he devoted himself entirely to the stage writing.

He wrote folk plays in the coarser style, comedies , vaudevilles , texts on comic operas, serious dramas and tragedies, in all about 200 works, but not without the help of employees, among whom especially Ducange , Édouard Simon Lockroy , Ferdinand Vallon de Villeneuve and Louis Brisebarre Worth mentioning, while conversely several of the best pieces that bear the name of Alexandre Dumas' (e.g. Térésa , Angéle and Catherine Howard ) are written by Anicet-Bourgeois.

In the last years of his life, Anicet wrote almost only Feerien (Féerie (French, sp.ferih), a stage play in which decorations and magical transformations through machinery are the main thing) or rather the text of brilliantly prepared furnishings and show pieces. He died in Pau on January 18, 1871.

Of his pieces have been preserved in the repertoire until recently:

  • J'enlève ma femme , Passé minuit , La joie de la maison , Les trois épiciers , Le maître d'école , La petite Fadette , La fiole de Cagliostro , Pascal et Chambord , Cotillon III

also the dramas:

all of which saw more than 100 performances.

Le maître d'école was the literary model for Johann Nestroy's burlesque The Bad Boys in School from 1847 with the music of Michael Hebenstreit .
