Victor Henri Joseph Brahain Ducange (born November 24, 1783 in The Hague , † October 15, 1833 in Paris ) was a French poet and novelist.

Ducange came to Paris early on , where he got a position in the Ministry of Commerce, lost it after the Restoration and, after a short stay in England, turned to the stage and novel writing, which granted him a modest income, but incidentally due to his free-spirited, namely the Religious fanaticism was challenged in many ways by the government. He died on October 15, 1833.

Among his numerous plays in the melodrama genre , Trente ans, ou la vie d'un joueur (1827) is the most famous and effective. This work served Johann Nestroy as a model for his play Thirty Years from the Life of a Rag . Of the others, there are:

  • Le prince de Norvège (1818); the melodrama
  • Calas (1819);
  • Le colonel et le soldat (1820);
  • Élodie (1822);
  • Therese (1822);
  • Les diamants (1824);
  • MacDowell (1826);
  • Il ya seize ans (1831);
  • La vendetta (1831) etc.

Ducange's predilection for the terrible and the horror is evident in all the pieces; his style is often rough and harsh and touches the bizarre. Even his novels, although now read less often, had great success in their time due to the dramatically exciting plot and lively presentation:

  • Agathe (1819, 2 vols.);
  • Valentine, ou le pasteur d'Uzès (1821, 3 vols.);
  • Léonide, ou la vieille de Suresnes (1823, 5 vols.);
  • Le médecin confesseur (1825, 6 vols.);
  • La Luthérienne (1825, 6 vols.);
  • Les trois filles de la veuve (1826, 6 vols.);
  • Ludovica (1830, 6 vols.);
  • Joasine, ou la fille du prêtre (1835, 5 vols.).
