The Sleepy Sleepers are a Finnish pop / rock / punk band from the city of Lahti .
Band history
The band released a total of 19 albums between 1975 and 1989 . The main members were Sakke Järvenpää and Mato Valtonen, who later founded the Leningrad Cowboys . Several influential Finnish rock musicians were at times members of the Sleepy Sleepers .
Part of the band plays in the film Calamari Union (1985) by Aki Kaurismäki . The film anticipates some elements of the later Leningrad cowboys . In a sense, all members have the same identity (all are called Frank) and appear similarly dressed.
The Sleepy Sleepers caused a stir with their provocative show and were even banned from performing in the city of Lahti. The songs often took up topics that were taboo in public. The music combines different style elements. In addition to "stupid elements", straight rock is a trademark of the Sleepers (Finnish: Sliipparit ). Part of their repertoire consists of cover versions, which are often put into a different context through the text and the interpretation. Short skits are also part of many albums.
Many records have the character of concept albums in which themes are developed in an ironic way. "Sleepy Sleepers Sings Matti ja Teppo" consists of rock versions of famous hits by the duo "Matti ja Teppo". The album "Sings Elvis" parodies an interview with Elvis Presley as a transition between the songs. The album title "Takaisin Karjalaan" (Back to Karelia) alludes to the area of Karelia, which is considered the Finnish cultural heartland and a large part of which had to be ceded to the Soviet Union during the Second World War . The Sleepers were targeting revisionism. Originally the album was supposed to be called "Karelien zurück", but the record company did not dare to release this title. The Sleepy Sleepers cultivated a rebel image, they provoked with nude representations and, like British bands, with swastika armbands. However, this is not associated with a neo-Nazi sentiment.
Mato Valtonen rejected the frequently used categorization “punk band” with the hint that when the Sleepers started they didn't even know what punk was because it didn't even exist yet. In 2006 the band got together again for some selected gigs.
