Johannes Andries "Jan" Kruis (born June 8, 1933 in Rotterdam ; † January 19, 2017 in Mantinge , province of Drenthe ) was a Dutch comic book artist and writer.

Life

Act

Kruis started drawing his first comics as a child. In 1970 his comic series Jan, Jans en de kinderen appeared for the first time in the women's magazine Libelle . The humorous series, which - similar to André Franquin's Gaston or the first volumes of Zeps Titeuf series - consists exclusively of one-pagers, was a great success; All in all, 1191 episodes appeared in a total of 27 albums. In German-speaking Switzerland, the series was previously published in the school, children's and youth magazine Spick under the name of the Tromp family . The protagonists are the father Hans Tromp, the mother Hanna, the daughters Lisa and Lena, the dog Miggel and the cats Otto and Sissy. In 1980 the German favorite publishing house published parts of the series under the title Ulli, Ulla and the children .

Jan Kruis earned his first spurs in the studio of the Dutch comic book pioneer Marten Toonder .

Private

Jan Kruis was married to Els Kruis-van Zanden since 1958; they had two daughters, Leontine and Andrea, who also became a cartoonist.

Honors

In 1996 Jan Kruis became a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion .
