Semily ( German Semil ) is a town in Okres Semily in the Czech Republic . It belongs to the Liberecký kraj region and has about 9,000 inhabitants.

history

The city of Semily was founded in the 14th century near a fortress. From 1542 it was owned by the Smiřický von Smiřice family , and in 1622 it came to the Wallenstein estate . Then different owners took turns.

With the construction of the south-north German connecting line , Semily was connected to the railway in 1855. In the second half of the 19th century a center of the textile industry was established here. With relocations to India or China and the dismantling of machines, this industry has been in decline since the early years of the 21st century.
