Antonín Rezek (born January 13, 1853 in Jindřichův Hradec , † February 4, 1909 in Prague ) was a Czech historian and politician in Austria-Hungary .

Life

Antonín Rezek grew up as the son of a watchmaker. He completed his history studies at the Charles University in Prague in 1876 with a doctorate. He then worked at the National Museum in Prague and taught as a high school professor from 1878. In 1883 he became an associate professor and in 1888 he received a call for Austrian history at the Czech University in Prague as the successor to his teacher Václav Tomek . With Jaroslav Goll he built up the historical seminar and was involved in the training of the first generation of the so-called Goll School . As a historian, he mainly worked on the 17th century.

In 1896 Rezek was appointed to the " cisleithan " Ministry of Education in Vienna , headed by Baron Gautsch , and in 1897 was promoted to head of section . From 1900 to 1903 he was minister without portfolio in the Koerber Ministry . As the Czech compatriot minister, he had the task of mediating in the complex network of German-Czech relations. The establishment of the Czech Technical University in Brno was a success . When the Young Czechs demanded the official Czech language in the Reichsrat , this was rejected by Prime Minister Ernest von Koerber in 1903 , and Rezek resigned to strengthen his compatriots. In 1904 he became a member of the Bohemian Landtag , but had to give up his job for health reasons.

From 1891, Rezek was a member of the Bohemian Academy of Emperor Franz Joseph for Science, Spoken Word and Art and was also accepted into the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences . The University of Saint Petersburg awarded him an honorary doctorate .
