Emil von Guttenberg

Emil Freiherr von Guttenberg (born January 4, 1841 in Tamsweg , Austria, † January 30, 1941 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian general and railway specialist.

Life

The aristocratic Guttenberg family came from Württemberg . The son of Johann Ritter von Guttenberg, the head of the forestry office in Tamsweg, first graduated from the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt. As a young officer he took part in the battles in Solferino in 1859 and Königgrätz in 1866 and was in the occupation of Bosnia in 1878 . In 1876 he was assigned to the newly formed General Staff. In 1884 he became a board member of the railway office and in 1888 a member of the advisory board of the Austrian State Railways. In this advisory board attached to the Presidium of the General Management, he gained insight into both the military and civil railways and gained great influence in the process. In 1894 he became deputy chief of staff and the following year field marshal lieutenant .

In the years 1896 and 1897 he was the first minister of the newly established Imperial and Royal Railway Ministry in the Badeni cabinet . He was unable to carry out the grand plans, such as large-scale nationalization of the railways. However, he had a major influence on the strategic expansion of the rail network. He also did the preparatory work for the construction of the Tauern Railway .

Freiherr von Guttenberg received numerous awards, such as the title of privy councilor .

In 1911 Emil Ritter von Guttenberg became president of the "Valbandon Erholungsheim- und Seebad Aktiengesellschaft" ( Valbandon in Istria ).

Emil's brother was Adolf Ritter von Guttenberg (1839–1917), who taught forestry at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna .
