Adolf Ritter von Guttenberg (born October 19, 1839 in Tamsweg , † March 23, 1917 in Vienna ) was an Austrian forest scientist and conservationist .

Live and act

Adolf Ritter von Guttenberg came from a noble family from Württemberg . His father Anton Ritter von Guttenberg was the head of the forestry office in Tamsweg. Adolf studied at the Forestry Academy in Schemnitz (today Banská Štiavnica in Slovakia ). From 1862 he was employed at the kk Styrian Salzkammergutforst Grubegg in Bad Mitterndorf and then at the kk Forstamt Gusswerk near Mariazell . In 1867 he was employed as an assistant at the kk Forstakademie Mariabrunn in Hadersdorf-Weidlingau .

From around 1869 to 1871 he worked as a forester, later as a forester in Gorizia and Lokva in the Ternovana Forest. In 1871, the newly married Guttenberg moved to Innsbruck, where he took up a position as a forestry specialist. In 1877 he received a professorship for forestry at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Vienna (BOKU) and taught wood metrology , forest value calculation , forest statistics , forest management , forest management teaching and accounting . During his teaching post he was elected rector of BOKU three times .

Guttenberg retired in 1911 , he wrote several specialist books and from then on supported a number of associations. In 1912, for example, he founded the "Austrian Nature Conservation Park Association". From 1910 to 1912 he was chairman of the German and Austrian Alpine Club . He received several honors, Emperor Franz Joseph granted him the title of court counselor and honored his services with the award of medals. He received honorary doctorates from the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Giessen and the University of Vienna. Ritter von Guttenberg died of cancer on March 23, 1917.

Guttenberg was married twice. His first marriage was to Adelheid Heinrica Engelhardt (born January 7, 1846 in Gorizia, † February 4, 1875 in Innsbruck). The wedding took place on November 29, 1869 in Gorizia. Adele was the daughter of Georg Ludwig Engelhardt, a private civil servant and employee of the Ritterwerke from Görz / Trieste and Josepha Schima from Vienna. After her death Guttenberg married the younger sister of his deceased first wife, Friederike Elizabeth Antonia Engelhardt (born March 11, 1850, Gorizia; † August 29, 1912, Gusswerk near Vienna), called Elise. The first marriage had two daughters, Maria and Emilie. With Elise Guttenberg had nine more children, five sons and four daughters.

Guttenberg's son Adolf (* 1883; † 1924), also called Bulli, was married to Thusnelda Birnbacher, their daughter Elfriede, married. Czeija (1910–1990) became a psychologist and was involved in the Marienthal study .

Guttenberg's brother, Lieutenant Field Marshal Emil Ritter von Guttenberg , was the first railway minister in Austria. The eldest brother, Councilor Hermann von Guttenberg, was a rural forest inspector in Styria. Other brothers were Justus von Guttenberg, Colonel of the General Staff, Julius von Guttenberg from Bregenz, State Railroad Inspector and Ludwig von Guttenberg from Villach, Senior Lieutenant a. D. and state railway official.

  • On June 28, 1933, a memorial was unveiled for Adolf Ritter von Guttenberg in Vienna's Türkenschanzpark .
  • In 1941 the former hunters and fraternity “Silvania Vienna” was given the name “Comradeship Adolf Ritter von Guttenberg”.
  • In 1910, an extension and museum building for the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences was approved in Vienna-Währing . This building, located on Feistmantelstrasse, was named Adolf-von-Guttenberg-Haus at a meeting of the professors' committee on July 7, 1960 .
  • In 2017, on the 100th anniversary of Adolf Ritter von Guttenberg's death, an exhibition was shown at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna.
