Erich Schmidt (politician, 1943)
Erich Schmidt (born August 14, 1943 in Vienna ; † January 28, 2019 ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and entrepreneur .
Life
After attending elementary school and the Bundesrealgymnasium with high school diploma in 1961, he studied at the University of Vienna . During this time he was also federal chairman of the Association of Socialist Middle School Students . He then worked at the Institute for Advanced Studies and from 1970 in the Economics Department of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions . In 1976 he became its director.
From 1979 to 1988 he was a member of the National Council . From 1983 to 1986 he also held the position of State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Industry in the Sinowatz Federal Government . From 1986 to 1987 he was Federal Minister for Agriculture and Forestry in the Vranitzky I federal government .
After 1985 under his predecessor Günter Haiden the wine scandal the Austrian wine industry had shaken the "strictest wine laws in the world" was adopted under his leadership, and there were strict controls introduced. Quality wine had to be labeled with a state banderole. When, in 1987, the Ministry of Agriculture in the Federal Government Vranitzky II fell back to the ÖVP, he also resigned from his National Council mandate.
From 1987 he was an entrepreneur. Due to his involvement in Eastern Europe, he got into trouble. In May 1999 he had to file for personal bankruptcy. A threatened criminal case was put down by Federal President Thomas Klestil . He was buried at the Esslingen cemetery .
