history

In December 1918, Paul Felix Lazarsfeld and Ludwig Wagner founded the Free Association of Socialist Middle School Students, which, however, was dissolved again after a short time. In the years 1923/1924 the Association of Socialist Middle School Students emerged from which in 1925 the Association of Socialist Middle School Students of Austria emerged . Viktor Frankl was chairman in the 1924/1925 school year and Marie Jahoda was chairwoman in the 1925/1926 school year .

From 1925 to 1933 the magazine Der Schulkampf was published as a separate organ . In 1934 the VSM was dissolved by the Austro-Fascist corporate state , like all of the social democratic organizations .

In 1953 the VSM was re-established. For a long time he was considered to be one of the SPÖ's cadre schools, but politically he was mostly in opposition to his mother party.

Before the dictatorship, members of the VSM included Marie Jahoda, Hertha Firnberg , Bruno Kreisky , Jura Soyfer and Adolf Kozlik . In the 1950s and thereafter, Karl Blecha , Heinz Fischer , Hannes Androsch , Ferdinand Lacina , Peter Kreisky , Eva Kreisky geb. Zgraja, Peter Kostelka , Hans Besenböck, Rudolf Schicker and Erich Schmidt are well-known VSM members.

In the 1960s, the VSM's office was in Vienna 2., Praterstrasse 25. The VSM's magazine was now called Rote Tafel . The VSM published the little red student book in the early 1970s .

Although the VSM had 6,700 members in 1971, it broke away from the SPÖ in 1973 under Trotskyist leadership and quickly became insignificant.

Shortly after the VSM was detached in 1973, the Critical Schoolchildren Campaign was founded in 1976 .
