history

In 1925 the Salesianer-Verlag , the forerunner of today's Don Bosco Verlag, was founded in Munich . In 1938 the publishing house was banned by the National Socialists and the rooms were sealed by the Gestapo . In 1943, a bomb attack also destroyed the publishing house with all its inventory and the archive.

After the Second World War , the Salesian Don Boscos Edmund Johannes Lutz campaigned for the founding of the publishing house, which took place in 1948. His commitment and the intercession of the famous writer Erich Kastner is due to the fact that the American military government the Don Bosco publishing the on August 12, 1948 License granted to publish educational and pastoral media in the context of Don Bosco. The publishing house discovered potential as a writer early on, for example Luise Rinser in 1952 with her Christmas play You drew with the star .

In 1963, Don Bosco Verlag acquired the Lindauer Verlag Kleine Kinder in order to expand the previous program structure to include elementary education . Works by authors such as Elfriede Pausewang - the mother of the author Gudrun Pausewang - have seen numerous reprints to this day. In 1988, after the death of the managing director Johann Ernstberger, the Salesian Don Bosco Alfons Friedrich took over the management of the publishing house. In 1987 the publishing house first published texts by Elli Michler , and in 1989 the well-known text I wish you time . In 1995 the Don Bosco Verlag took over the Hildesheimer Bernward Verlag with its publishing focus on aids for pastoral practice and religious education. The catechetical publications have since been published by Don Bosco under the Bernward label .

In order to better face economic and social challenges, Don Bosco Medien GmbH was founded in 1999. In addition to the book publisher, it also includes a magazine editorial, print and design, specialist book trade and a monastery shop as business areas.

In 2003 the publisher published the diary entries of Filippa Sayn-Wittgenstein , who died in an accident and who became a bestselling author posthumously with the book Filippa's Engel .

The 60th anniversary of Don Bosco Verlag was celebrated in 2008.
