According to its own statements, the AKS is committed to a “democratic, socially just and fear-free” school and society . The federal chairwoman of the AKS has been Nina Mathies since July 2020.

structure

The student organization is headed by a six-person federal team, which is elected once a year at the federal conference. The organization is divided into the federal organization, the state organizations and their local and school groups. According to Section 76, Paragraph 2 of the SPÖ Organizational Statute, the AKS performs the party activities of the SPÖ for schoolchildren and, according to Paragraph 5, the AKS Statute requires the approval of the Federal Party Executive Committee, and the Association Secretariat is affiliated with the SPÖ Federal Office. According to Section 48 (18), the AKS provides three delegates at federal party conferences of the SPÖ.

The AKS is the only Austrian member in the European network of student organizations, the OBESSU . Internationally, the AKS cooperates with the German young democrats / young left .

Positions, Background and Goals

The student organization sees itself as a progressive organization that advocates an “open, solidary and pacifist society” in which no one has advantages or disadvantages based on origin, gender, appearance, sexual orientation, material or religious background. According to her own statements, she tries to motivate her classmates to take a critical look at the existing social system, to question norms, rules and conventions and to reflect on what is taken for granted. This is the basis for thinking and acting in overall contexts on a regional and global level. She sees school as a part of society: This forms the next generation and would therefore be an essential factor for the development of society. The AKS advocates sufficient state funding for the education system. A weakening of equal opportunities and the restriction of freely accessible and high-quality education should, in their opinion, be resolutely rejected.

As a lobby group for schoolchildren, the AKS supports independent projects and offers information and assistance for everyday school life as well as advanced training outside of school. The work is supported by publications. Regular meetings serve to discuss current and fundamental issues. Some important fields of activity of the AKS are school-specific activities such as participation and active involvement in the student council (at local, state and federal level), AKS local groups and the editing of school newspapers. The AKS sees its work well founded on these three pillars.

Until 1973 the Association of Socialist Middle School Students was a student organization of the SPÖ, after its separation from the mother party, the AKS was founded in 1976.

In the course of the poor performance of the SPÖ in the National Council election 2019, the AKS joined the protest actions of the Socialist Youth , the VSSTÖ , the Young Generation , the Red Falcons and the FSG Youth, in which an open letter to the mother party made 5 suggestions for a Reorganization of the SPÖ were submitted. In the course of this protest, representatives of the AKS demonstrated in front of the SPÖ parliamentary club.

Student council and school policy

In 1981 the AKS provided Harald Rossegger, the first federal school spokesman in Austria. This succeeded again with Martin Wolfram (BS Vienna) in 1990. Also in 2001 the AKS was able to provide the federal school spokesman with Jakob Huber (AHS OÖ). From 2003 to 2005, the AKS provided two national school spokespersons, Romana Brait (AHS NÖ) and Selma Schmid (AHS Vienna), one behind the other. Since the federal student council elections in September 2005, the ÖVP- affiliated student union has once again provided the federal school spokesperson. With Hannah Czernohorsky as ZLA area spokeswoman, the AKS will again be a representative member of the federal student council elections in autumn 2018.
