Organizing Bureau of European School Student Unions

The Organizing Bureau of European School Student Unions (OBESSU) is the European umbrella organization of national school and student representative organizations based in Brussels . Rasmus Åberg currently holds the position of General Secretary.

The OBESSU is a member of the European youth forum .

The OBESSU pursues the following goals:

  • To generate greater solidarity , cooperation and understanding between young people in Europe and especially between schoolchildren and their national organizations
  • to eliminate all discrimination and injustice in the European education system
  • to work with all student organization structures in Europe to create real Europe-wide cooperation
  • to represent the interests and views of European pupils vis-à-vis European educational institutions
  • to create greater understanding between peoples to allow the development of a peaceful and safe environment and thus facilitate the development of each individual
  • to support and improve the quality and availability of democracy in education in Europe

The highest body of the organization is the General Assembly, which is held annually and elects the five to seven-member board for two years.

Every year the OBESSU organizes around five Europe-wide conferences and seminars for student representatives.

Projects and Campaigns

The OBESSU is currently working towards the recognition of the declaration of schoolchildren's rights, which was drawn up and adopted by the member organizations in 2006. In the autumn of 2008, the "Light on the Rights" campaign was launched, which should lead to more recognition of the declaration across Europe.

history

The OBESSU was founded in Dublin in April 1975 and since September 2008 has comprised over 20 member organizations, three observers and several contact organizations (including the German National Schoolchildren Conference). From the German-speaking area, the Austrian Action Critical Schoolchildren and the Swiss Union of Schoolchildren Organizations CH / FL are members. In addition, the German association " SV Bildungswerk " is an associated member.
