history
The first written mention of the name Barberà comes from the monastery of Sant Cugat and dates to the year 985. In the will of Viscount Guitard, the castle Barberà is mentioned. Until the 19th century, Barberà remained a small transit point on the Camí Reial (Royal Route), which led to the city of Barcelona. The connection to the railway network gave the first impetus for growth and industry, including paper mills, settled in Barberà. However, the actual development towards a city in the greater Sabadell or Barcelona area did not begin until the 1950s with the massive immigration of workers from the structurally weak regions of Spain. The population has increased almost tenfold since 1950, from just under 3,300 at the time to 33,091 today.
