history

In 1270 the village was first mentioned as Rodensbach . Via Rudenspach (1271), Ruedispach (1289), the current place name Riespach was finally given in 1298.

From the 11th century to 1327 Riespach was part of the Grafschaft Pfirt and became Austrian property like the entire Sundgau.

The Thirty Years' War in Riespach and the surrounding area was marked by murder, looting, famine and epidemics. While Riespach had 257 inhabitants in 1618, in 1650, after the end of the war, there were 30 souls.

Now part of France, the area was slowly repopulated, particularly by Swiss families, following a royal edict of 1662 that guaranteed tax exemptions for six years.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Riespach belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Altkirch district in the Upper Alsace district .
