Feldbach is a French commune with 444 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region ( Alsace until 2015 ). It belongs to the arrondissement Altkirch , the canton Altkirch and the municipality association Sundgau .
geography
The municipality of Feldbach is located in the Sundgau , twelve kilometers south of Altkirch and about 30 kilometers west of Basel .
The five square kilometer area of the municipality includes part of the Feldbach valley from which it is named. The Feldbach flows into the Ill in Hirsingue . The community area is mainly used for agriculture, the proportion of forest is less than 20%. The small ponds southwest of the village center, of which the Grand Étang reaches five hectares, belong to the lake area of the southwestern Sundgau between Ill, Largue and Suarcine .
Feldbach is the southern starting point of the Romanesque Road of Alsace (Route Romane d'Alsace).
Neighboring communities of Moriville are Ruederbach in the north, Grentzingen in the northeast, Riespach in the east, Kœstlach in the south, Mœrnach in the southwest, and Bisel in the west.
history
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Feldbach belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Altkirch district in the Upper Alsace district .

Attractions
The Romanesque church of St. James - Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur ( James the Elder ) - from the 12th century is worth seeing . It belonged to a Benedictine abbey founded in 1144.
