geography

The municipality of Mœrnach is located 18 kilometers from Altkirch in the southern Sundgau near the border with Switzerland.

history

The origin of the name goes back to the Latin names "Mauriniacum" and "Domaine de Maurinius". It is also known that the settlement was called "Mournach" around 1230. The houses of the Seigneurie de Ferrette , the lords of Ferrette , were subordinate to Mœrnach as their chief town (chief lieu). At the same time the administration of the villages Kœstlach, Vieux-Ferrette, Durlinsdorf, Liebsdorf, Winkel and Moos was located there. The place was involved in several wars and other conflicts, including the Thirty Years War . In February 1916, seven houses were set on fire from a shell . Six other houses were destroyed during the First World War.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War, Mœrnach belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Altkirch district in the Upper Alsace district .
