geography

Kœstlach is located in the Sundgau near the border with Switzerland , on the edge of the Jura , in the so-called Jura alsacien , north of the Burgerwald. Kœstlach is located about 37 kilometers southeast of Belfort , about 26 kilometers southwest of Basel , 15 kilometers northwest of Delémont and 3 kilometers northwest of Ferrette between the neighboring communities of Mœrnach in the west and Vieux-Ferrette in the east. history

Kœstlach was already settled in Gallo-Roman times (52 BC to 486), as the ruins of Roman thermal baths and other archaeological finds prove. The thermal baths were on the Roman road from Augusta Raurica ( Augst ) to Porrentruy . The parish of Kœstlach was first mentioned in 1144. In the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) the village was sacked . From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Kœstlach belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Altkirch district in the Upper Alsace district .

Attractions

The church of Saint-Léger (St. Leodegar) was built in the 12th century and renovated between 1668 and 1745 because of a fire in the Thirty Years War. Parts of the original Romanesque church have been preserved, including the bell tower and parts of the vault in the choir . The church is named after Leodegar von Autun . In 1748 the church was re-consecrated by the Prince-Bishop of Basel . The main altar of the church comes from the Lützel monastery , on it are several statues and reliquaries and a painting by Jean-Jacques Bulffer (1744–1819) depicting Leodegar von Autun. The left side altar is dedicated to the Virgin Mary , the right side altar is dedicated to Blasius von Sebaste . The organ was installed in 1838 by Valentin Rinckenbach in place of an older organ and repaired in 1981. The older organ was sold to the municipality of Zaessingue .

The ruins of the Roman thermal baths in the lieu-dit (place that is named ...) Burglegarten were classified as Monument historique (historical monument) in 1907. They are privately owned. The villa to which the thermal baths belonged was built in the 2nd century and abandoned in the 4th century. Stones from its walls were used to build other buildings in the village and eventually a Merovingian cemetery was set up instead of the thermal baths .

The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows ( Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Douleurs ) from 1883 was built on the site of one of the oldest pilgrimage churches in Sundgau.
