Bettendorf (Alsatian Batterf ) is a French commune with 450 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region . It belongs to the Arrondissement Altkirch and the municipality association Sundgau .

geography

The municipality of Bettendorf is located in Sundgau , seven kilometers southeast of Altkirch . The Ill flows through the municipality, the center lies above the Willerbach, shortly before its confluence with the Ill. The municipality is characterized by the Ill valley and the secondary valleys of the Willerbach and the Ruederbach. In the north of the community area, a striking terrain rises up to 60 meters above the valley floor.

Neighboring communities of Bettendorf are Schwoben and Hausgauen in the northeast, Willer in the east, Henflingen and Grentzingen in the southeast, Ruederbach in the south and Hirsingue in the west and northwest.

history

Between 1139 and 1147 the place was mentioned as Betendorf in documents and belonged to the county of Pfirt until the Peace of Westphalia .

The place name comes from the word pray . The coat of arms of the community is speaking with Bible and rosary .

The first church in Bettendorf is documented in 1302, it was dedicated to Saint Martin . This church was replaced in 1682 by the Église Sainte-Croix (Holy Cross Church ), which, renovated several times, was finally completely rebuilt in 1841.

In 1793 and 1801 the place name still had the spelling Bettendorff .

The school building was built in 1860 and initially also housed the Mairie . From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Bettendorf belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Altkirch district in the Upper Alsace district .

Départementsstrasse D 9b runs through the south of Bettendorf from Hirsingue to Werentzhouse , which opens up the upper Illtal. Several nationally important roads meet in nearby Altkirch . Here is also connected to the rail network ( route Paris-Est - Mulhouse-Ville ).
