Ethel Clayton (born November 8, 1882 in Champaign , Illinois , † June 6, 1966 in Oxnard , California ) was an American actress of the silent film era .

Life

Ethel Clayton studied at St. Elisabeth College. In 1908 she finished her studies there with a degree in philosophy and history . Later she worked in a joint stock company and played on the side in the theater. There she was discovered for silent films and shot under well-known directors such as Cecil B. DeMille , Robert G. Vignola , George Melford and Donald Crisp . In the years from 1909 to 1948 she starred in more than 180 films.

Most of the silent films that Clayton starred in were far from becoming classics of the genre . But they played the production costs and also made a profit. The red-haired Clayton was considered one of the Hollywood beauties in the 1910s and 1920s , despite her height of only 1.65 meters.

Ethel Clayton was married twice, first with the actor and director Joseph Kaufman (1882-1918) and with the second marriage with the actor Ian Keith (1899-1960). Her marriage to Keith was divorced on January 31, 1931 because of his brutality and excessive alcohol consumption . Both marriages remained childless. She died at the age of 82 in St. John's Hospital in Oxnard of complications from a heart attack . Ethel Clayton has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
