Kloster Saddell ( En : Saddell Abbey ; . Gäl Abaid Shaghadail ) is a former Zisterzienserkloster in Scotland . The name is of Norwegian origin ("sandy dale").
location
The monastery is located in Argyll on the east side of the Kintyre peninsula .
history
The monastery was founded in 1207 by Ragnall (Reginald), son of Somerled , (King of the Hebrides) and was manned by monks from the Irish monastery of Mellifont , which in turn was a subsidiary of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The monastery was probably already closed during the reign of Jacob IV (1473–1513); the bishops of Argyll occasionally used the title of Commendatabbot from Saddell.
Buildings and plant
The monastery complex is now a cemetery. Historical tombstones are preserved.
