action

The narrator Dr. Hans Riedinger introduces his best friend Dr. Leopold Bachmann, with whom he shares an apartment. In addition, both are tax officials. The friends also do a lot of other things together. Leopold has a great weakness, he just can't say no. Then Riedinger talks about how the incomprehensible began.

Their landlady, Mrs. Dirrmoser, their daughter Franzi and Leopold, had said more to the wine that evening than was good for them, and so it came to a kiss between Leopold and Franzi. This quickly spread around the house and Frau Dirrmoser saw no other way out to protect her daughter's honor than to make Leopold believe that he had to become engaged to her daughter because of yesterday's kiss. Franzi was also not exactly enthusiastic about her mother's desire, as she wanted to become a great singer. Although Leopold did not want this connection under any circumstances, he was advised on all sides that he must draw the conclusions because he had compromised the young lady in the presence of others. So Leopold had to say goodbye to his numerous girlfriends, which was not always easy and even got out of hand due to his indecision.

Elfi was the first he wanted to inform. However, she did not give him an opportunity because she talked incessantly and even said at the end that it was possible to get married. Lola, who works at the theater, was next on Leopold's list. On his tram ride to see her, Leopold made the acquaintance of a charming young lady, whom he was immediately impressed by, but who got off before he could ask her for her name. Since Lola had also driven two tracks, this separation caused fewer problems. The separation from Trude also turned out to be easier than expected, as she slapped him after she had lost a traffic case because of his testimony. After this incident, he met his beautiful stranger from the tram in the park, who introduced herself as Steffi, and immediately invited her to a soccer game in the stadium on Sunday. His engagement to Franzi should also be celebrated on Sunday. Since he had come to an agreement with Franzi, he could break loose for the afternoon. In the stadium he suddenly met Elfi, who invited him to her wedding with Rudi, who was accompanying her. "Another one," he thought to himself. After the game he went to the park with Steffi and completely forgot the time and his upcoming engagement party while talking to her. In the meantime all invited guests have arrived and Ms. Dirrmoser didn't know what to do.

Through a meeting in the park with his superior, Steffi found out about the upcoming engagement. When she wanted to turn away from him, Leopold made up her mind, for the first time he was able to say no, no to the arranged engagement. Ms. Dirrmoser was also a woman who made quick decisions and urged Dr. Hans Riedinger in the role of the fiancé. When Bachmann appeared upset and believed that his engagement was being celebrated, his friend Hans explained to him that an engagement was being celebrated, but that of Frau Dirrmoser and himself.

Three years have passed and Hans Riedinger has not regretted his decision at the time and his friend, who could not say no, has become extremely happy with his Steffi and their child.
