Folk actor

A folk actor is a television or stage actor who appears primarily in productions with a pronounced local color. By portraying a certain type of role , folk actors often create a recognition effect in the audience .

The roles of a folk actor do not necessarily have to be comical, the dialect or just the peculiarity of the character played is often decisive ("original"). The actress Erni Singerl , who died in 2005, once described the term folk actor as an "actor who does not have to act, but where the plot comes from the gut".

Critical voices (partly also from within the drama guild) criticize, however, that folk actors are often reduced to their traditional role type, show little range in the design of characters and, as popular local heroes, do not shy away from trivial plays and series offers.

However, this does not rule out that popular actors can also have a high formal and actual level of training and take on serious roles on stage and in film.

Bavarian and Munich folk actors

Bavarian folk actors (not to be confused with folk singers or comedians such as Karl Valentin or cabaret artists such as Gerhard Polt ), who became known beyond Bavaria's borders through films and, above all, numerous television series, play an important role .

One of the pioneers of the first generation was the actor and director Joe Stöckel , who with his friend Beppo Brem was the first to work on folk plays for cinema and television. Finally, the series Komödienstadel , broadcast by Bayerischer Rundfunk since 1959 , in which comedy plays recorded for television were shown, developed into a long-running hit with the public. Here, the actors who had previously been tried out on local stages became known to a wider audience. Milestones were the Royal Bavarian District Court at the end of the 1960s and the multiple award-winning Munich stories in 1974 , which immensely promoted the nationwide popularity of the Bavarian mentality. This was followed by television series such as Police Inspection 1 , Monaco Franze - The Eternal Stenz or Master Eder and his Pumuckl , which were successfully produced until the end of the 1980s.

From the 1990s, the old guard of Bavarian folk actors slowly died out. Actors such as Ottfried Fischer , Jörg Hube and Christine Neubauer followed in their footsteps, but were only able to partially revive the Munich scene. The media landscape had changed and the television stations were increasingly relying on all-German productions without dialect and local flavor. In 2004, the Bavarian Broadcasting Company dared to start over with the Munich 7 police series .
